Dir: Scott Spiegel
Stylishly shot, darkly comic slasher set in a small-town supermarket that faces imminent closure and takeover by a multinational. As the recently redundant night crew set to their melancholy work, stacking shelves and mopping floors, someone is picking them off one by one ... What elevates this fairly derivative slasher plot is the snappy (and occasionally stolen from the Coen Bros) dialogue (an obvious inspiration to director Spiegel's mate, Quentin Tarantino), the originality of the death scenes and the sheer uninhibited visualisation of the gore. KNB EFX Group provide some of the gooiest, most brutal splatter this side of H.G. Lewis and if you don't wince as you see a poor nightworker's head split in two sideways by a meat-cutting band-saw, you really should check yourself into hospital for awhile. You're most likely a danger to yourself and others. This is great fun anyway. The 80 minute running time passes like 10 and it stands up to many repeated viewings. ***1/2
